Wisdom teeth (also referred to as ‘third molars’) can become problematic in some patients and require removal.

Our experienced oral surgeon, Dipesh, has performed hundreds of wisdom tooth removals throughout his career, observing the most minimally invasive techniques to do so.

When is Wisdom Tooth Extraction necessary?

Wisdom tooth removal may be needed if wisdom teeth become impacted or are causing dental infections and decay.

Sometimes, wisdom teeth can be partially erupted through the gum, making it a challenge to keep them clean. Consequently, this can invite the risk of decay and gum disease around the teeth and neighbouring teeth. In such cases, extraction of wisdom teeth may be recommended in the interest of your oral health.

Wisdom teeth are not essential to chewing and biting, and you can live a fully healthy lifestyle with excellent chewing function without them. Failing to have them removed can lead to an increased risk of decay in neighbouring teeth, as well as persistent pain and infections spreading to other parts of the mouth and body.

Specialised Coronectomy for Wisdom Teeth

In cases where the roots of your lower wisdom teeth are too close to the nerve running along the lower border of the jaw, a coronectomy may be needed rather than the removal of the wisdom tooth in full.

A coronectomy is the process whereby your oral surgeon leaves behind the roots in order to avoid damaging the nerve, resulting in a reduced risk of numbness in the cheek, chin, tongue and gums following wisdom tooth removal. In cases where the nerve in the tooth has died, or the tooth is severely decayed, a coronectomy is not possible.
