Root canal treatment is a procedure suggested by your dentist when a tooth has sustained a serious dental infection.

It’s a potentially tooth-saving treatment, often resulting in the infected tooth being rejuvenated, with the help of a crown or restorative onlay.

Your introduction to Root Canal Treatment

Breakdown: restorative procedure for treated infected teeth. A crown or onlay is placed on top of a tooth after treatment.

Life Benefits: can prevent the extraction of a tooth/can save a tooth/restores function.

Anaesthetic: yes.

Appointments: approximately 2-3, although this depends on complexity.

Treatment Time: from 45-60 minutes per appointment.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is the process whereby your dentist removes an infected substance from your tooth, seals it, and places a crown or onlay over the top. Modern root canal procedures are virtually pain-free.

A small hole is created in the tooth, allowing your dentist to thoroughly clean out the infected pulp (the living tissue that has become infected). A temporary filling is placed, and at a later appointment this is replaced with a ‘long term’ filling, dental crown or onlay.

FAQs

Why Might I Need Root Canal Treatment?

The need for root canal treatment can be obvious, though it can also be very subtle until symptoms are serious.

If you experience dental trauma (an injury to a tooth), or you have a large untreated cavity and obvious signs of decay, you could be in serious need of root canal treatment.

This said, sometimes very minor decay can escalate quickly into a serious infection, which is why at-home oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are paramount.

How Do You Know If You Need a Root Canal?

In cases where a dental infection begins to cause noticeable symptoms, you may experience:

  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth.
  • Intense and regular tooth sensitivity and pain.
  • Changes to the shade of a particular tooth.
  • A large cavity/patches of dark decay around a tooth.
  • An abscess/pus coming from an abscess.
