A well-made crown can be life-changing for your smile.

Your introduction to Crowns

Breakdown: a covering placed over a weakened tooth, which can prevent it from cracking or breaking in the future

Life Benefits: restores function to teeth damaged through decay/dental trauma/dental infections.

Appointments: from 2-4 appointments (depending on complexity).

What is a Crown?

A crown is a restorative and reinforcing cap that fits over a tooth in need of TLC. Crowns are made from durable materials that can resemble real tooth enamel, making them an excellent solution for repairing moderate to severe damage.

Crowns can also be used as part of a dental bridge and to fit over dental implants with a view to replacing missing teeth.

Crown placement requires the following steps:

  • Consultation/Examination
An in-depth examination of your teeth is performed (this may be during your routine appointment, during which the need for a crown may be diagnosed, or during an appointment you have booked due to abnormal symptoms with a tooth). X-rays, digital photographs, and scans are taken. Your dentist will advise on the need for a crown and explain why it’s beneficial and how it will restore your tooth. A treatment plan is presented to you for approval, including a full breakdown of fees.
  • Preparation
Any dental decay present is removed. If your tooth’s shape has been compromised, we may need to smoothen out its surface by removing some tooth enamel to achieve this. Digital dental impressions are taken using our intraoral scanner to obtain an accurate mould of the damaged tooth and those adjacent to it. These moulds are used by the dental technician, who can create your crown to the exact dimensions needed for your smile. The shade of the crown is matched to your own tooth shade.
  • Fitting your Crown
Your crown will be ready approximately 2 weeks after your impressions have been taken. We will invite you back to the practice for a fitting appointment at this time. This is when we make sure it is an optimal fit for the affected tooth, after which a dental adhesive is used to affix it firmly in place.
