What is Periodontitis?
Clinically referred to as ‘Periodontitis’, advanced gum disease is a progressive, bacteria induced, inflammatory condition which targets the ligaments and bone which keep the teeth within the jaw. Bone loss is a crucial indicator of periodontitis.
Periodontitis is often painless, making it challenging for patients to notice its evolution. If left untreated, it can lead to teeth becoming loose and eventually falling out. Recent studies have also indicated that periodontitis is linked with several other chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, making treatment not just beneficial for your oral health but your general health, too.

FAQs
How Is Advanced Periodontitis Treated?
If your general dentist or hygienist has concerns about your periodontal health, they will recommend a consultation with a dentist with a Special Interest in Periodontology or a Specialist Periodontist.
During this consultation, a thorough examination and special tests of the gums will be performed to help formulate a periodontal diagnosis. This will allow for a comprehensive understanding of the severity of the disease and potential short- and long-term prognosis.
Initial therapy usually involves non-surgical treatment, where the focus is to ensure optimal oral hygiene practices and the removal of hardened bacterial deposits from under the gum line. This is usually carried out under local anaesthesia. Following initial treatment, a review is carried out to assess the response to treatment, and further treatment may then be recommended, or a long-term maintenance programme is outlined, as periodontitis is a chronic disease.
